OPPORTUNITIES! ON AND OFF THE ROAD
In 2017, Bishop Moses Bol Deng and Bishop Peter Yuol Gur prayerfully requested that Diversity Serves secure funding for a pre-owned Land Cruiser for Bishop Peter to be able to use in his visitation to remote parishes and villages. To that end, the $15,000 cost was raised through the Hometown Hope Auction, The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Danville, Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, and other private donations! This vehicle is absolutely essential to the mission of Bishop Peter, who immediately was able to travel over incredibly rough terrain to visit villages to assess needs for schooling (the church is the primary source of education in these areas), clean water, and capacity building in general. Bishop Peter has even reported that the vehicle saved a life: he was able to rescue a woman who had just given birth and needed to go the clinic for the treatment immediately. Attention now needs to turn to increasing the Tonj Diocesan capacity to keep that essential vehicle well-maintained and on the road for its missional purposes, spreading and living out the gospel over the 525 kilometers in the Diocese of Tonj. To that end, Diversity Serves has a goal of raising $2000 in 2018 to establish the “Tonj Transportation Fund” that will be available to cover costs associated with utilization of the Diocese of Tonj Land Cruiser for doing church outreach and development, community needs assessment, capacity building, and emergency assistance when needed.
